Becoming an Elementary School Teacher

Today becoming an elementary school teacher is appealing to those who want to make a difference and help to mold the minds and lives of the very young. Certainly in order to become an elementary school teacher, one of the greatest things you should have is a love of children and teaching them. But you must also have large amounts of patience as well as plenty of stamina to be able to stand up to everything that these young minds will throw at you.

Below we will take a look at the steps you will need to follow if you want to become an elementary school teacher.

1. It is important that you have as good and well rounded an education as possible. You should ensure that you take classes in English, Math, Science, History, Sociology as well as the Arts and Child Psychology and/or Development.

2. As soon as you are able, then start working with young children on a voluntary basis, say at your local elementary school or with a youth group in the area where you live. The best way of obtaining information and gaining access to these is through contacting your local government Parks and Recreation Department, United Way or your local School District Department.

3. It is important that you get as much experience in the classroom as possible as many programs require those wishing to attend them to have some classroom experience. In fact, some programs will require their students to have had at least 80 hours of classroom experience as a volunteer. This is even before they start their training.

4. Attend a college or university where they offer a degree in elementary education. However, if this is not offered, then look at those which offer either 5th year or post-graduate programs that you are able to apply for. Learn everything about their entrance requirements. Also find out everything you need to know about their pre-requisite courses and any standardized tests that they may need you to sit.

5. Once you have obtained your degree in order to become an elementary school teacher, it is at this stage you should join one of the professional associations such as American Federation of Teachers or the National Education Association. By doing this, you will be kept abreast of any new developments within the field of elementary education as well as providing you with details of any new positions that are available and which may well be better suited to your skills and expertise.
