Elementary Science Education - 4 Tips For Science Fair Projects

In this article we will be taking a closer look at science fair projects which are often used by teachers today in elementary science education lessons. These projects provide the children with a chance to not only them allow to show what it is that they know about science, but how to complete an experiment in order to find the answer to a question posed for them by their teacher.

Today, such projects are not just for the older kids. All elementary school students can learn a lot about science through these and also have great fun producing them. Generally in the 3rd grade, children at elementary school will use these projects to help them demonstrate scientific principles. But some children may find that their school actually requires them to provide a real experiment, while those children that are in the 4th or 5th grade at elementary school will produce an experiment that is able to answer a question using a certain scientific method.

When it comes to a teacher setting their elementary school students a science fair project, they should take a few points into consideration.

1. Remember it needs to be basic. They are not learning about rocket science just yet.

2. Look for those projects which they can complete in a very short period of time, say over a weekend.

3. Remember that it is important that these are projects which a child should be able to complete on their own as a judge may well disqualify the child from the competition if they suspect that the parents did it for them. However they can get help from their parents if they need to.

4. Get them to produce a project which is neither a display or demonstration but rather one which either tries to answer a question or solve a problem that you have set for them.

By setting them such problems, as the ones provided below, these will give you an idea of the sort of assignments you should be setting your students in order that they can produce their science project.

1. If they were to chill an onion before cutting it, would it prevent them from crying? 2. What amount of vinegar and baking soda is required in order for them to produce the best chemical volcano? 3. What is the best type of plastic a person can use in order to prevent water from evaporating? 4. Are insects that come out at night get attracted to lamps because of the light or heat? 5. If you have a white and a color candle in front of you and you light them, then which one will burn more quickly?

For any elementary school teacher it is important that all their students' elementary science education lessons be fun but also safe as well. So by keeping in mind what we have discussed above a teacher should be able to devise a science project which will keep the students enthusiastic about learning.
