When it comes to elementary math education, this is the foundation stone that will be laid for our children when they go onto higher education in the future. Certainly in the beginning children will find it very difficult to grasp the concepts in relation to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as fractions and the math that revolves around time and money. It is an elementary teacher's role to help them understand these better. But also there are ways in which parents can help their children too in order that they not become too stressed out in relation to homework and so that they will get the most out of their time at school.

Certainly during their first few months at school many elementary school students find it difficult to complete the assignments that their teacher sets them in regards to math. This is normally because they are having to learn new skills each day and so some may find it difficult to actually keep up with what they are learning. Below are some tips which can help you as a parent to be proactive in your child's education in regards to math.

1. Get your child to take notes

Encouraging your child to take notes during their lessons will help in many ways for them to understand what has been discussed much more easily. They should write down what the topic of the lesson was that they studied that day. They should also write down each problem and all the steps that were used in order to solve it. If you can explain to them that they should include any words next to these steps so that they know what it is they are doing. Then you should get them to make a mark against those problems or steps that they find confusing and then ask their teacher to explain these steps or how to solve the problem in a different way.

2. Getting them to understand the task that they have been set

It is important that as a parent you help your child to learn how to read through their homework instructions properly. It is vitally important that your child understands the instructions with regards to solving the math problems before they actually begin the task set for them by their teacher. By rereading the instructions and the problems that they have solved in the classroom, this will help them to discover information and details that they may have missed originally.

3. Just be there for them

Finally for any child when starting at school for the first time and being faced with learning elementary math education lessons, just knowing that you are there to help them is extremely important to them. Often your child may feel more comfortable asking you how to solve a math problem rather than ask their teacher in front of the other students because they may be afraid that they look stupid. Certainly this interaction with your child will help to encourage them in their education and you will then be more aware of their strengths, weaknesses and just how they are progressing at school academically.
