Today a career in elementary education is possibly one of the most responsible jobs that a person can do. It is during their first few years that children learn the fastest as well as the most. It is during their time in elementary school that what they are taught will provide them with a solid foundation when they move further on in their education and also when they then become adults.

It is the role of the elementary school teacher to provide these young children with the tools and the environment in order for them to develop.

When it comes to teaching young children, the elementary school teacher will take an approach to how the children learn which is completely different from that which is used later on in their educational lives. Often to provide their children with basic skills and knowledge, such teachers will use games, stories, music, films, art, books and computers. They will also provide them with lessons and activities which help to get the children to interact socially as well as teaching them how to work together and how to communicate effectively with each other and with others around them.

Currently in the USA, in order for a person to become an elementary school teacher they must hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree. Plus they will also need to have completed a teacher training program that has been approved by the district and state education departments. Plus on top of this, in order to pursue a career in elementary education, a person must have obtained the minimum number of education credits that are required along with their teacher’s license. The license will of course need to be renewed at some stage during their career so they will need to continue their education in order to achieve this. Also if a teacher wishes to, there are a number of certification programs available which a teacher can take and this will demonstrate to others just how competent they are to be teaching young people.

Because in the next 10 years a large number of teachers will be retiring in the USA, there are a great number of opportunities for those who want to pursue a career in elementary education. However, because there is a lot of competition for schools to find good teachers, those who are already teaching in elementary education may find that they will be encouraged to take other positions through the schools offering them higher pay and bonuses. Currently a teacher is earning on average around $40,000 per year and those who are considered to be in the top 10% of the profession are earning around $60,000 per year. Therefore if you are someone who is seriously considering becoming a teacher of children in elementary education, it may be wise to start your training as soon as you possibly can.
